BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - Nearly 180 students will pick up degrees Wednesday as Mountain State University holds its final graduation ceremony at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

Interim President Richard Sours says they have persevered under stressful conditions.

In June, the Higher Learning Commission revoked MSU's accreditation because of leadership, organizational and integrity issues.

Last week, the Higher Education Policy Commission approved the University of Charleston's plan to take over MSU by expanding to Beckley and Martinsburg

In all, MSU is conferring 658 degrees to 624 students this month.

Valedictorian Christopher Freeman is assistant director of public safety in Bald Head Island, N.C, He's getting a bachelor's degree in organizational leadership with a concentration in criminal justice administration.

Freeman says the flexibility of online classes helped him balance work and academics.
