British researchers said the commonly prescribed antibiotic amoxicillin is ineffective for treating severe coughs and bronchitis.

A new study looked at more than 2,000 adults with respiratory infections.

Some received amoxicillin others a placebo.

Researchers said there was little difference in how severe or how long the symptoms lasted between the two groups.

Many patients who took the drug also suffered side effects.
