RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -

Virginia's attorney general is warning residents to be wary of holiday scam artists.

Ken Cuccinelli says that during the holidays, it's a good idea to give money only to charities and businesses you're sure you can trust.

To that end, he offers several tips.

First, check a charity's website and validate if it's accredited by organizations like the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance, or is licensed by authorities. Second, be cautious if a charity contacts you out of the blue or sends a solicitation that looks like an invoice. And don't let them rush you, and never give cash or surrender your banking information.
