West Virginia ranked fifth among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in severance taxes collected during the third quarter, according to the Census Bureau.

The state received about $116.4 million in severance taxes in the quarter, according to the Census Bureau. States receiving more in severance taxes were Texas, $854.9 million; Alaska, $743.7 million; North Dakota, $512.6 million; and Louisiana, $201.1 million.

Kentucky ranked eighth on the list at $73.7 million. Ohio ranked 22nd at $4.1 million. Virginia was 28th with $483,000. Maryland and Pennsylvania do not have severance taxes.

Overall, state and local governments collected about $3 billion in severance taxes in the quarter, according to the Census Bureau.
