A large and potent low pressure system is moving toward Appalachia and will arrive Wednesday with a wintry mix for the 59 News viewing area. Ice storm warnings have been issued for Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties from late Tuesday night until 7 p.m. on Wednesday. There are also Freezing Rain Advisories out for Monroe County until 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The warnings are for possible ice accumulations above a quarter of an inch and the advisory is for amounts up to two-tenths of an inch of ice.

"We expect this storm to come through here in three stages," said Stormtracker chief meteorologist Spencer Adkins. "The first phase is sleet and freezing rain in our eastern counties, then a change to all rain during the day Wednesday, then a change over back to snow as the system moves away late Wednesday night into Thursday."

The Stormtracker meteorologists say cold air will be trapped in the valleys, especially on the eastern side of the viewing area, a common phenomenon known as cold air damming. Then warmer air will run over top of the cold air with rain falling through the cold layer of surface air, causing ice to form.

"As we always say, one of the bigger problems is that unless you see icicles forming, usually the roads just look wet, but it can totally fool you with just how slick it is on the roads," said Adkins. "Any amount of ice is going to be very slick and could be dangerous to drive on until that air temperature bumps up above 32 degrees."
