Chris McKinney didn't always dream about being a fighter, but once he was introduced to Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts, that's all he's thought about.
ALDERSON -
Robin Ward and her family were forced to watch from outside as their house in Alderson erupted with flames after smelling smoke and calling 911.
"When they got here and they cut a breather space, it just went up, and it's a total loss," Ward said.
It was just the season of giving, and the fire took what was just presented to the Ward children.
"The boys are 12 and 16 and lost everything they got for Christmas," she said. "Isabel is three and lost everything as well."
Alderson Firefighter Matt Brooks was one of 40 fighters to battle the blaze. He says houses like the Wards lived in can sometimes become a tinderbox.
"You have to be concerned with a flashover point, where the smoke and the gas get at a certain temperature and just ignites," Brooks said. "You had fire in between the tin and the old part of the house and it was just traveling down the tin to different parts of the house."
For the Wards, the house was a mix of new and old, all of which is now a memory.
"There's a wood stove that's been here since the house was built over 100 years ago. The upstairs was just all rebuilt, all new furniture. Everything is gone," Ward said.
