Snag a Deal on Your Resolution

January means gym time to a lot of Americans, and many local gyms want to make the process as painless on the pocketbook as possible.

"We have hundreds of thousands of people in this country that make a resolution to become healthier and be fit," said Lindsay Rotella, director of marketing for Generations Physical Therapy and Snap Fitness of Barboursville and Winfield.

"Those are the people coming through our doors."

Rotella said Snap Fitness of Winfield has been open about 18 months, and last winter, even without any special deals, membership spiked 25 percent through February.

Both clubs are open 24 hours a day, Rotella said, and this year the Winfield location is offering 50 percent off the usual $29 enrollment charge. The Barboursville location, which opened in October, is offering a special for anyone who switches from another club.

"If they switch from another club they're currently at, they get two free months at Snap Fitness," Rotella said.

The Charleston Family YMCA is one of many Y's offering membership promotions throughout January. The special is a reduced joining fee of $10 and no membership payment until February.

Brickhouse Cardio Club, which has 40 locations throughout the country, including nine on the way and 10 currently in West Virginia, is offering 66 percent off its membership fee throughout January.

And for Brickhouse Cardio Club, fitness goals are stressed year-round.

"Our goal at Brickhouse Cardio Club is not only to get the member in during that New Year's resolution time, but with our goal-setting process for every member, we want to keep them motivated and coming throughout the year," Brickhouse co-founder Vic Sprouse said. "When you set fitness goals and achieve them, it inspires our members and walk-ins to keep coming.

"We want to create a comfortable, supportive and fun atmosphere for our members to meet their fitness goals."

At least one Brickhouse locations offered a holiday challenge with incentives such as free water bottles and T-shirts for regular class attendance and even weight loss during what many consider the hardest time of year. Their "Don't Gain a Pound" contest ran from mid-November through the end of 2012.

And at The Ryan Ferns Healthplex in Benwood, stability in membership rates is the special feature.

"At The Ryan Ferns Healthplex we simply offer the lowest rates in the region all year long, without any joining fee and without the requirement to sign a long-term contract," said CEO Ryan Ferns, who is a CrossFit Level 1 trainer and has a doctor of physical therapy degree.

"We believe that by allowing our members to pay month-to-month and without joining fees, we are creating an environment that is more welcoming and generates a better morale among our members."
