JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Last year was down year for coal shipments on CSX but an improving one for petroleum shipments, the railroad reported Jan. 2.

Total carloads for the 52-week period that ended Dec. 29 were down 17.6 percent, CSX said in its weekly carloads and intermodal traffic report. Despite the decrease, coal still accounted for more than a third of the carloads moved by the railroad.

Also showing declines were grain, which were down 8.3 percent, military, machinery and transportation equipment, down 7.7 percent, and chemicals, down 3.5 percent. In contrast, total carloads of petroleum products increased 13.4 percent, and automotive shipments were up 17.8 percent.

Overall, total carloads shipped in 2012 were down 5.5 percent, but container shipments increased 9.7 percent.
