West Liberty University recently ranked No. 1 in West Virginia for campus safety, according to rankings compiled by college website stateuniversity.com.

WLU President Robin C. Capehart said he was pleased to receive the ranking information, which was announced in late December.

"It's important for parents to know that we work hard to ensure the safety of our students and our campus," Capehart said in a news release. "Our campus police work daily to maintain a high level of safety awareness and inter-agency cooperation that results in a very safe environment for our employees and students."

Lt. Tom Hostutler, head of WLU Campus Police, credited the housing and residence life staff with identifying and reporting problem behavior.

According to a WLU news release, the school employs armed police officers who can make arrests and uphold the law, unlike security officers employed by other campuses.

"The safety of students and the entire campus community is everyone's top priority at West Liberty," Hostutler said in a news release.

He said a concerted effort has been made in recent years to strengthen the relationships among other local law enforcement agencies.

The StateUniversity web site ranked all colleges and universities on a scale that accounts for the severity of a crime, as well as the frequency of crime, and statistics were compiled from crime reports submitted by the school's law enforcement.
