PINCH -

Police say Kanawha County sheriff's deputies fatally shot a man after he fired a pistol at them.

The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. Saturday at a residence near Pinch.

The sheriff's department says in a news release that two deputies went to the residence in response to a report of a violent altercation between a man and his mother.

The deputies saw Lawrence Edward "Pete" Vaughn through a window and went to the rear of the house, and then around to one side. They then approached the front door and Vaughn opened it and began firing.

Police say the deputies returned fire. The deputies and Vaughn's mother weren't injured.

Vaughn lived with his mother at the residence.
