The Concord University men's basketball team suffered a 79-59 loss to
Fairmont State Saturday night at the Carter Center in West Virginia
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition.
The defeat drops Concord's record to 8-4 overall and 4-4 in league play.
Fairmont State improved to 9-3 overall and 7-1 in the WVIAC with the
win.
Sophomore guard Mike Boyd led Concord in scoring for the third
consecutive game with 16 points to go with five rebounds and three
assists. In his last three contests, Boyd is averaging 20.7 points per
game.
Senior forward Damien Tunstalle was the only other CU player in double
figures, scoring 11 points. Tunstalle also tied for a game-high six
rebounds. Sophomore guard Alex McGlothin came off the bench to score
nine points and sophomore guard Thomas Brown added eight points to round
out Concord's leading scorers.
The Mountain Lions held advantages over FSU in successful three-point
attempts (5-3) and bench scoring (22-14). The rebounding battle was tied
at 28. Concord was out shot 56.4 percent - 42.9 percent from the field
and 70 percent - 52.9 percent from the foul line. Fairmont State forced
CU into 15 turnovers while only committing 12.
Boyd started the game on fire, hitting a three-pointer and another
jumper in succession to give Concord an early 5-0 lead less than three
minutes into the game. Concord fought to hold onto its lead until a 13-4
Fairmont State run that spanned five minutes gave the Fighting Falcons a
20-18 edge with 10:53 to play in the half.
FSU extended its lead to 15 points (37-22) before the Mountain Lions
were able to respond by scoring the half's final eight points thanks to
three points apiece from Tunstalle and Boyd with two more points coming
from McGlothin to cut Fairmont State's advantage to just seven points,
37-30, heading into halftime. However, Concord's comeback hopes were
dashed when Fairmont State stormed out of the break to go on a 15-4 run
to push its lead to 18 points at 52-34 before ultimately pulling away
for the 79-59 victory.
Four of Fairmont State's starters scored at least 10 points with Isaac Thornton's game-high 18 points leading the way.
The Mountain Lions will look to bounce back from the defeat when they
hit the road to take on Davis & Elkins on Monday (Jan. 14) at 7:30
p.m.
