SANDLICK -
A night of violence, one Mercer County man dead, killed by a unnamed sheriff's deputy and now a community of people are asking why.
Shards of glass, busted windows and a door ripped from it's hinges still remain after state police said a man went on a rampage with a chainsaw destroying his home.
Sgt. D.W. Miller with the Princeton Detachment of the State Police said, sheriff's deputies were dispatched on a domestic call and when they showed-up to Surface Hill Drive, they found 31-year old Jason Dillon inside with a large club in hand.
He said deputies instructed Dillon to put down the club.
Instead, Sgt. Miller said Dillon came towards them and deputies fired.
"You have to make a split second decision and that decision could be your life and someone else' life," Sgt. D.W Miller, West Virginia State Police said.
And that decision ended Jason Dillon's life on Saturday night. Dillon's father lives right next door and family members were walking the grounds when our crews arrived.
Sgt. Miller said Dillon's girlfriend was in the house on Saturday. He said she was not harmed.
The family did not speak with us on camera but they said they want answers. Our crews were able to catch up with Dillon's neighbors.
"It was so scary, when me and my husband went outside there were cop cars. I heard glass breaking, it didn't feel safe to be outside," Stephanie Payne, Dillon's neighbor said.
Payne is a new mother of 8-month old Warren and said she worries about this violence happening so close to her home.
She wants to know why Saturday turned deadly and the West Virginia state police are working to answer that question. They said it is standard procedure for an outside agency to investigate a deputy related shooting.
State police said alcohol may have played a factor and 59 News will continue to get the details online and on the air.
