New gun control proposals have West Virginians on edge

MERCER COUNTY -

President Obama addressed the nation today with new gun control proposals.

His gun control measures will include proposed bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Some West Virginians are not too happy with these new proposals.

"I spent 20 years in the army going everywhere in the world defending my country. I've been to Iraq twice, and now I feel like my rights are being taken away from me right here at home," said veteran and gun owner Doug McKinney.

"Putting additional laws out there that affect my life, liberty and pursuit of happiness does not settle well with me," James Graham said.

"Over the gun control debates the past two weeks, semi automatic and assault weapon sales have skyrocketed. The only gun left belongs to the owner.

"I was in business during the first assault weapons ban which failed back in 1993. People were afraid, they're afraid of the government. They bought guns and high powered magazines and ammunitions. People hoarded them because they thought the government was going to take it away from them," said Doves Custom Guns owner Jerry Dove.

Some believe the enforcement of laws already in place is more sensible than adding new ones.

"They don't enforce what they already have in the books, so putting more laws in the books, that's not going to help."

Others offers their ideas of potential solutions to the gun violence epidemic.

"Why can we not either arm our teachers or our principals or better than that, why can't we find the money in our country to hire police officers or resource officers to put in our schools to guard our children?"

"Why do they call the police when somebody is there with a gun? Because they bring more guns. When the good guys have guns, the bad guys don't have a chance," said gun owner Steven Hoffman.
