Greenbrier County Highway workers prepare for snowstorm

LEWISBURG -

Road crews got ready for the snow storm early.

59News caught up with a salt truck driver getting ready for his shift in Greenbrier County. As the weather turned from rain to sleet to snow today, drivers at the Department of Highway's District 9 were gearing up to stay ahead of the elements. Driver Raymond Erskine knows it's best to prepare for the worst.

He said, "It could be very very drastic. It could be awfully cold and start to freeze which would make our job a lot tougher. But hopefully we will just get this small amount and it won't do a lot, hopefully."

He says when ice is a possibility, trucks are constantly coming and going, getting loaded up with salt and salt brine for pre treating the roads. And their priority Thursday was tackling busy streets.

He said, "We try to keep the main roads open, make sure they are clear and then if it looks good to us we start on the secondary roads, then on to the smaller roads trying to keep everything clean, but primary is first."

So far District 9 in Greenbrier County has used about 300 tons of their salt supply and they can tell by looking at the notches they have marked on the wall of the salt bin. They say it's the smaller storms that actually use more salt than a big one.  And he said, keeping roads safe requires help from all drivers.

He said, "In weather like this the biggest challenge is traffic. There's a lot of people who go out on the highways just to see what the weather is like instead of just staying home. If they would just kind of be considerate, it would make our jobs a lot easier."

Salt trucks, Courtesy Patrol, and State Police were out in full force during the storm Thursday.
