Police have identified the victim in a shooting on Mahan Street in Oak Hill on Thursday, Jan. 17.

Oak Hill police say 25-year-old Maurice Lamar McCain died from a gunshot wound in the hospital after he was shot in a home off of Highlawn Avenue.

Oak Hill police said Friday they were still in the early stages of investigating but one thing they can say is they believe the victim and the suspect were related.

They also said they were able to arrest 23-year-old Terreque Gray by looking at the scene of the crime and the statements taken from witnesses.

He has been charged with murder and is being held in the Southern Regional Jail.

At this point they have not pinpointed a motive in the shooting.

But police say they do not want people in the area to be worried about random acts of violence.

Lt. Lee Kirk said, "I don't think you have to worry about violence, you have your violence everywhere, not just in Oak Hill. I think we all are aware that it usually leads back to drugs, maybe not in this case, but most of the time."

And this isn't the first time that the suspect, Terreque Gray, has been arrested.

He was arrested for armed robbery back in April of 2012.

He was also arrested in September of 2012 on a separate misdemeanor charge.

As Oak Hill police continue their investigation they are asking anyone with information about these men or the incident to please come forward.
