FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — The Fort Collins City Council has taken the first step toward a ballot question about a ban on hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas. Under action taken Tuesday, the April ballot question will be on council's agenda for action next month.

Last month the council adopted a moratorium through the end of July on new oil and gas development inside the city and on other city-owned lands. It does not prohibit hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, on existing wells to free gas and oil trapped underground.

According to the Fort Collins Coloradoan, people opposed to the oil and gas extraction technique flooded public comment sessions at city council meetings in recent weeks demanding a ballot referendum in the April 2 municipal election asking for a permanent ban.
