RALEIGH COUNTY -

Two new officers were just hired to make schools in Raleigh County more safe.

Raleigh County Sheriff Steve Tanner explained that this new idea is not because of what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He says this plan has been in the works for over two years now.

59 News spoke with parents who were happy to hear a patrol presence is now in their kids schools.

"It makes parents feel more secure to send their kids to school, so yeah I believe it's pretty good," said Shady Spring parent Aaron Webb.

59 News caught up with a student at Shady Spring High School. He explained what'd he'd like to be done to feel safer when he walks through those double doors every day.

"As of now, we do have security and stuff but. With one security guard, and there be a big fight or a gun shoot out, he can't protect over 8 to 900 students," said Shady Spring High School senior Juwan Rowe.

When this new plan turns to action, that still only leaves high schools patrolled during school hours. But there's talk of putting them into Elementary and Middle Schools as well.

"Every school needs it really because the way this world is going, the world is kind of crazy these days," Webb said.

Most parents feel their kids are safe. But what about staff? 59 News wanted to know how secure principals and teachers feel while on the job.

"Nobody can promise anybody's safety. I can't promise my own child's safety. But we drill, we have the necessary training and we make it as safe as humanly possible. And I truly believe that," said Shady Spring High School Principal Moye.
