RALEIGH COUNTY -
Some people gripe and moan when they see fresh white powder accumulate on their front porch, but for Ghents' Marathon gas station, they welcome snow with open arms.
The manager said grocery items are the popular buys on days leading up to these snow days.
"We sell a lot of eggs, milk, grocery items. Because we are closer than Daniels, which is 6 miles, so we will probably sell out of everything," said Marathon Manager Beverly Farrish.
Farrish said at Marathon gas, ice and windshield wiper fluid are flying off the shelves. She told 59 News that these items are what people desperately need for generators and to keep food cold.
Before you hop into your vehicle and hit the roads, keep in mind some advice from those who have already traveled through the arctic elements today.
"Just slow down. We have to slow down and just take our time. Regardless of where you have to be, we have to slow down and take our time so we don't end up in an accident," said Jerome English of Kansas.
One woman left Cincinnati in the wee hours of the morning to try to beat the snow, but as you can imagine, her luck quickly ran out.
"We don't get a lot of snow. It doesn't snow much there, but it's always cold. It's always freezing. We're used to the cold but not snow. We left early to beat it, but we are in it now," said Cincinnati native Tenita Wilson.
Another woman travels all the way from IOWA today. She explained that the Mountain States' landscape is quite unlike what she's used to driving in the flatlands.
"We are from Iowa. We are going to North Carolina. We didn't think it was suppose to snow. What are you thinking now? In Iowa we get lots of snow but we don't have mountains, so yeah this is different for us," Iowa's Billie-Joe Corcan said.
Corcan told 59 News that if and when during her journey the weather continues to get worse, she'll play it safe, pull over and check in to a hotel for the night.
