WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS (AP) - The Greenbrier and eight unions representing more than 1,000 workers have agreed to a five-year contract.
The vote Friday was 549-37 in favor of ratification. The resort and union leaders signed the agreement after the vote.
"I don't know if it's the highest percentage in favor of a contract in the history of our unions, but I know it's the highest during my tenure here," Peter Bostic, business manager for Workers United Local 863, told the Register-Herald of Beckley.
The new contract goes into effect immediately. The old contract was to end Jan. 24.
Owner Jim Justice said the agreement is an important milestone for the sprawling, high-end resort.
"It speaks volumes for the resort's longevity and the strong partnership we have established with our more than 1,200 hard-working employees at The Greenbrier," Justice said in a statement.
Justice bought The Greenbrier out of bankruptcy in 2009 for $20.1 million. He also rescued the Wintergreen Resort in Virginia's Nelson County.
