Officers in Hinton made an arrest on Tuesday, Jan. 29 in connection with a scam that crossed state lines and involved a fugitive from justice.
A woman from Iowa alerted Hinton Police Chief Derek Snavely to the scam at around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. She said she bought four tickets to Super Bowl 47 off of Craigslist from a man in Hinton. She sent him a cashier's check for $3,800 but never received the tickets.
That sparked an investigation by the Hinton Police Department. They tracked the check to 117 Main Street in Hinton, where they found Jeffrey Scott Barfield, 37. Barfield gave officers a fake name, but questioning lead to his actual identity. Investigators also discovered that Barfield was a fugitive from North Carolina who was wanted by the U.S. Marshal Service.
Chief Snavely said that Barfield told them that he stole pictures of someone else's Super Bowl Tickets, then listed them on Craigslist for sale. Snavely tells 59News that Barfield never actually had any Super Bowl tickets.
"We are currently reviewing everything," said Chief Snavely. "Barfield has come up in numerous investigations by us and other local agencies and even other states. This guy is a professional con artist and it will take some time to sort everything out, but additional charges are expected."
Investigators were able to recover the cashier's check the Iowa woman sent, before it was cashed.
Barfield is being held in the Southern Regional Jail while he is awaiting extradition.
