Truck drivers face many dangers in Wednesdays storms

RALEIGH COUNTY -

Driving has not been easy these days, especially for truckers and their tractor trailers.

So what are the dangers truck drivers face in the wind?

"Slinging water all over the windshield. I couldn't see anything. A couple of times I thought I would have to pull over but I didn't," said Chris Daniel from Coal City.

"It was pretty rough this morning, about 40 or 50 miles an hour wind coming through Charleston. Raining so hard, traffic was going 40mph but after I come toward Beckley it cleared off a bit, spots of rain here and there," Daniel said.

One truck driver from Michigan explained that on days with heavy winds, it's actually a lot safer to carry a heavy load.

"The lighter the load, the worse it is because it'll slide right over, you'll actually change lanes with the truck with a light load, the trailer will take off on you. With a heavier load, it holds the truck down in your lane. You don't stop as good and the big thing is to try to get the 4 wheelers to give you room in that," said Terry Sauers of Michigan.

Truck drivers gave their advice on how to best drive in the wind and rain.

"Cars don't think of what these trucks can do, they don't think what it takes to maneuver them, and when the winds start blowing, they don't think of how much room they need to give us truckers."

"The biggest thing right now in the rain is cars need to drive with their headlights on. They get in the road spray and if you're a light colored car, we cant see you back there. Just slow down and don't drive over your head and you'll be alright," said Todd Modderman of Georgia.
