Shepherd University alumna Carolyn Malachi will return to campus to perform in a free
concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1
in the Storer Ballroom of the Shepherd student center.
Malachi's approach to
music combines jazz, hip-hop and spoken word. Dubbed "sweet
songstress" by BET, the independent, Grammy-nominated artist and
great-granddaughter of pianist John Malachi counts YasiinBey (formerly MosDef),
Radiohead and Sarah Vaughan among her great influences.
"We're really
excited to have Carolyn back," Christana Johnson, assistant vice president
for student affairs, stated in a release. "She was very involved with the
Multicultural Student Affairs office, including being a member of the
Multicultural Leadership Team, a group of students that promotes diversity and
advocates for social justice both on and off campus."
The concert kicks off
Multicultural Student Affair's Black History Month celebration.
"While Carolyn was
a student here she helped to plan and implement MSA's cultural celebrations. It feels like we've come
full circle to feature her in our Black History Month celebration,"
Johnson said.
