In “Pleasant Finds” Henri Venes creates hope for people with impacted lives in believable fiction that tracks how they manage to survive and come back fully into meaningful existence.
BETHEL, Alaska (PRWEB) February 02, 2013
Henri Venes’ new novel Pleasant Finds depicts lives which have gone into unconventional paths – into separation from and abandonment of the homes or families they grew up with and finding new things and meeting new people with which to build entirely new lives for themselves. Far from becoming sad, lonely refugees willing to blend into the dismal background of a big city, Venes’ characters find the magic of second chances.
The main character Lori (together with a faithful pet named Wilhelmina), finds her way to Washington state, in the town of Packwood which is a short drive from Seattle. Late of Virginia and a failed relationship with a guy named Michael, she does not have immediate plans. Fate and circumstance convene to make her firmly decide on relocating to Packwood, to halt what could have been an aimless wandering – a physical manifestation of loneliness and grief. The few lucky details that convince her that life could be lived fully again are found in the normal everyday of American towns. Packwood offers a good place for a novelty shop that she opens and which she calls Pleasant Finds.
Venes has created a very well defined person in Lori – a character with innate but not easily identifiable strengths, one who survives well and does not succumb to depressive psychology. It is her character which naturally creates plot and narrative. It attracts Bill, a widower businessman from Yakima. Bill brings along the beginnings of a life complete with family and he is a good man. Pretty soon, Lori finds that her old life that still hurt with its memories no longer felt heavy on her shoulders, and that she was already living her life to the full. For her and other important characters of this surprisingly compelling novel, the orbits of their acquaintances, friends and families create a strong anchor that provides balance and strength through the storms that they weather. And life is blessed with Pleasant Finds.
