A fire at a home in Mt. Hope woke a man out of his sleep during the early morning hours of Wednesday, Feb. 6.
Three fire departments were called to the scene of a blaze in a single wide trailer on Lansing Street in Mt. Hope. Those included Bradley-Prosperity, Mt. Hope and Pax fire departments. Bobby Palmer with Bradley-Prosperity Volunteer Fire Department tells 59News that one of the firefighters was treated for a heat injury on the scene. He was released by the emergency medical technicians on the scene.
According to Palmer, when they arrived at the home, the flames were shooting through the roof. It only took them 30 minutes to get the blaze under control, but the home is still considered at total loss.
Palmer tells 59News that the homeowner was woken up by the smell of smoke. He apparently searched the home for a fire, but did not discover the flames until he was returning to bed. He did have two cats. He told firefighters that he left the front door open on the way out hoping the cats could escape. Palmer said one of the cats was killed inside the home. They think the cat died from the smoke. The other cat was not found inside.
What caused the fire has not been determined at this time. While it is not considered suspicious, firefighters have asked the state Fire Marshal for help in the investigation.
