RAINELLE -
Wednesday marked the very first day for students and teachers at the brand new Rainelle Elementary School.
First grade teacher Dana Nash had one of the worst rooms at the old Rainelle Elementary School building.
And it's no wonder it was falling apart... it was built back in the 1920's.
She said, "There was just a lot of cracks in the floor, I came in one day and part of the wall had fallen in so I was vacuuming and trying to keep my students calm. So being in this school has just uplifted all of us."
Now, after two years of planning and building, all 233 students and 20 teachers are making the new building their home.
Nash said, "They are incredibly excited they've said all day long, we love it we love it we love it!"
Safety was the number one concern when building the new school. The old school had more than 20 doors that were not always locked and the new school has just one way in and you have to be buzzed in by the secretary.
And not only is it safer - the students also have access to technology that puts the days of chalk and erasers to shame.
Nash said, "We use our smart board all day everyday, they are up there interacting with it. Gone are the days of chalk boards, they're geared differently now they want to interact."
While the old school holds decades of memories and history, it's also filled with asbestos and mold.
It'll be torn down as soon as construction on the new building is complete.
Nash said, "It just feels fresher the air... it just feels really good."
