USPS mail no longer delivering on Saturday

RALEIGH COUNTY -

Over the past several years, the United States Postal Service has delayed shifting to a five-day delivery schedule for mail. But, USPS just announced Wednesday that a new delivery schedule will begin the week of August 5th, 2013.

"There's plenty of things that come in banks that people depend on, like mortgage payments I don't think they should do that," said John Christian.

The good news is all post offices will remain open on Saturdays.

Your packages are still safe. They will resume their normal Monday through Saturday delivery schedule. It's your mail, however, that will not deliver on Saturdays. Some people are on the fence. They tell 59 News this new schedule really does not affect them.

"I'm just not one to get bent out of shape either way. I know usually there's a reason for them doing that," Alisha Weese said.

One Beckley man is happy his online entrepreneurial business is not at all affected by this change.

"Oh, definitely for me. I have an e-bay business right now, it's my sole source of income, so I definitely need packages to and from on Saturdays so that would help me out big time," Christian said.

The USPS said giving the public 6 months advance notice should be more than enough to let everyone plan and adjust accordingly.

"One good thing about it is we don't have to get any more junk mail on Saturdays. Hooray!" said Dawna Higginbothen.

So the big question remains: Why this new delivery schedule.

The answer: To reduce cost.

Since 2006, the US Postal Service has reduced its annual cost base by approximately $15 billion.

This new delivery schedule will save USPS an estimated $2 billion.
