West Virginia's new public schools superintendent says a mandatory statewide school calendar is not the answer to improving student performance.
Superintendent Jim Phares told a Thursday audience that schools should focus on hours of quality instruction.
The state Board of Education recently endorsed year-round schooling. Phares said that doesn't mean the state will impose that on the 55 county districts.
A veteran educator at West Liberty University agreed that quality trumps quantity. Educator Terry Wallace urges schools to focus on increasing the hours of actual instruction each day.
David Haney of the West Virginia Education Association said his teachers' group supports year-round schooling if that's what a given county wants.
The speakers addressed reporters and editors at The Associated Press' annual Legislative Lookahead, hosted by Marshall University's graduate campus.
