SunCoke Energy announced on Friday, Feb. 8 that they will be idling the
Dominion mine 36 in Buchanan County, Va. The closing of the mine meant
51 company miners and 39 underground contractors will be laid off.
"This decision was very difficult and we have worked hard to reduce costs in every aspect of our coal operations," said Vice President of Coal Operations, James Mullins.
Coal production will continue at the four remaining active Dominion mines, according to the release from SunCoke Energy. Mullins said that those mines will focus on managing costs, optimizing production, and making safety a top priority.
"We believe this focus will help us meet the tough economic challenges we face this year," added Mullins.
