SAVANNAH, Ga. -
An eight-run second inning proved to be too much to overcome for the
Concord University baseball team in Saturday's 15-6 loss at No. 29
Armstrong Atlantic.
Concord (0-2) was led by sophomore third baseman Ryan Johnston and
senior outfielder Bret Blevins. Johnston went 1-for-4 with one run
scored and two RBI while Blevins was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Senior short stop Josh Wenger produced his first hit and RBI of the season. Freshman outfielder Joe Camp also drove in a run.
Concord senior pitcher Drew Spear (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up eight runs, six hits and four walks in 1.2 innings.
For the second straight day, the Mountain Lions scored in the first
inning. Senior outfielder Jacob Mays and sophomore second baseman Jerrod
Groves led off the game with back-to-back walks followed by a Blevins
single up the middle that brought Mays home. CU added its second run in
the frame when Johnston drove in Groves for the 2-0 lead.
However, Armstrong (5-0) cut Concord's lead in half with a sacrifice fly
in the bottom of the first followed by its eight-run outburst in second
inning that gave the Pirates a commanding 9-2 lead through two innings.
All of the Pirates runs in the second frame were scored with two outs,
10 consecutive batters reached base for AASU.
Armstrong added two more runs in the fourth before Concord tallied its
biggest inning of the season to date with four runs in the sixth to cut
the score to 11-6. Johnston, Wenger and Camp all drove in runs and CU
drew three of its five walks on the day in the inning.
Any thoughts of a comeback for Concord were put to rest when AASU added
one run in the bottom of the sixth and three more in the eighth on its
way to the 15-6 victory.
Concord will look to take the final game of the series from Armstrong Atlantic Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
