Fire damages former Wyoming County school

An overnight fire inside of a former high school kept crews busy in Wyoming County.

It all happened Monday night in Wyoming county just after 10:30 at the former Glen Rogers high school.  Fire crews from Pineville and Upper Laurel Volunteer Fire Departments rushed to the scene-- seeing the flames from miles away.

"The way the building is set up you can see the gym from the road the flames were visible into the top windows," Tyler Cresong, training officer with the Upper Laurel Volunteer Fire Department said.

Flames scorched the brick and peeled the paint off the wall. But crews were able to contain the fire to the gym.  A short time later they thought the blaze was out but thought wrong.  Fire crews no sooner turned around than the fire rekindled and they had to fight the blaze a second time.

Fire crews said it felt more like a maze than gym.

"It is an abandoned building so over time people would put in there mattresses and dressers and it was more like a maze or an obstacle course so it made it harder," Cresong explained.

Crews fought on navigating through the challenging terrain. They were able to contain the blaze to side of the school. Cresong said they believe the blaze erupted inside of the gym but the state Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate what happened.
