BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -
An inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in McDowell County is going to serve more time for a crime he committed while he was still behind bars.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin announced on Wednesday, Feb. 13 that federal inmate Bryan Kent, 43, was found with a homemade knife, which is also called a "shank." He was found with the weapon on Sept. 1, 2012. Kent admitted that the cylindrical-shaped weapon contained a sharpened piece of metal at one end, and that he wrapped cloth material around the opposite end of the weapon to form a handle. Among the confessions was also an admission that he designed and intended to used it as a weapon.
Kent faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced by United States Senior Judge David A. Faber.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Assistant United States Attorney John File is in charge of the prosecution.
