RAND, W.Va. (AP) -

Authorities have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection to a fatal shooting that led more than a dozen Kanawha County schools to close while they searched for a suspect.

Kanawha County Sheriff Johnny Rutherford says Tremale Straughter of Rand was charged Thursday with first-degree homicide in the death of 19-year-old Harold Donovan Taylor.

Police say the shooting occurred in Rand around 4:30 a.m. Deputies found Taylor dead in his car that had crashed into a fence.

The Charleston Gazette reports that Kanawha County school officials initially placed 13 schools in the Rand area on a two-hour delay. The schools then were closed. They included Riverside High School, three middle schools and nine elementary schools.

In 2004, Straughter was sentenced to four years in federal prison on drug charges.
