Heroin arrests on rise in Fayette County

FAYETTEVILLE -

For decades law enforcement has been fighting a prescription pill problem all across the state. But now another drug is spreading like wildfire.

A new trend in drug use is emerging in the mountain state. Prescription pills may be out and heroin on the way back in.

Earlier this week Salwa Amin, a reality TV star on MTV's "Buckwild" is facing a felony charge of possession of heroin with intent to deliver in Nicholas County. A little closer to home in Fayette County deputies say Amin is not alone.

Her arrest is a part of a bigger problem across the mountain state, the return of heroin.

"It is all opiate based, so heroin is almost identical," Sgt. S.M. Gray of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department explained. "The pill thing was easier for a while because if you had your prescription you had your high."

Heroin is becoming cheaper to buy and with legislation cracking down on prescriptions, getting your hands on heroin is becoming a lot easier than a pills.

Our crews asked people in Fayette County about their thoughts on heroin hitting the streets.

" You hear about prescription pills, that's the only thing they do, you don't hear anything else any more," Jason Cottley of Oak Hill said.

Law enforcement officers expect heroin to continue gaining popularity. They said most of the heroin is coming from Detroit, Michigan and they are working to crack down on dealers bringing it into the mountain state.
