The History Channel's "Hatfields and McCoys" miniseries from last summer has reignited the buzz around the famous feud, and a delegate who represents that district wants to use that success to commemorate Southern West Virginia history.

Delegate Justin Marcum, D-Mingo, has introduced legislation that would create a special license plate to commemorate the feud. House Bill 2522 was introduced Feb. 18 with Marcum as the lead sponsor. Current language of the bill would allow the Division of Motor Vehicles to charge a $10 application fee, plus other fees, and an annual $15 fee.

Marcum, who also represents a portion of Logan County, said the state can use the success of the Hatfields and McCoys miniseries to draw tourists to that part of the state.

"With the recent success of the Hatfiled-McCoys, it is time to capitalize on its success," Marcum said in a statement. "We have an opportunity to make southern West Virginia a hub of tourism. I am proud to introduce this bill and will continue working to improve our local economy."

The DMV currently offers other commemorative plates, including those for veterans, teachers, NASCAR fans, state universities and others.

Delegates Rupert Philips, D-Logan; Joshua Nelson, R-Boone; Harry Keith White, D-Mingo; Jeff Eldridge, D-Lincoln; Doug Reynolds, D-Cabell; Ted Tomblin, D-Logan; Anthony Barill, D-Monongalia; Linda Goode Philips, D-Wyoming; Joe Ellington, R-Mercer; and Eric Nelson, R-Kanawha, have all signed on as cosponsors.

House Bill 2522 has been referred to the House Roads and Transportation Committee.
