With the cold weather on the way out and warmer weather on the way in, its the perfect temperature to create potholes. For drivers hitting a pothole can create a bigger hole in your wallet.
If a driver hits a pothole just right, it can causes hundreds of dollars in damage to a vehicle. Todd Saggs, Fixed Operations Director as Lewis Automotive showed our news crews two tires damaged from hitting a pothole.
One driver stopped after hitting the pothole but the other kept driving! The one with the less amount of damaged stopped driving. There was just a snag on the rim so repairing the damage wasn't too expensive.
But for the driver who kept driving, the pothole completely destroyed the tires rim. This cash the driver some major cash to repair and it's the start of pothole season at Lewis Automotive!
Saggs said one of every two cars worked on is related to pothole damage. So what should a driver do if you come across a gap in the pavement?
"The biggest thing you can do is try an anticipate the pothole and avoid it," Saggs said. He also adds, drivers should also slow down.
But even if drivers do slow down, some pot holes can cause damage at any speed! Our news crews found a pothole behind K-Mart in Beckley that measured 10 inches! Our crews slowly took our news car through the pothole and the front tire was submerged deep into the pothole. Saggs said this could cause major damage to our car.
"This could definitely damage the under carriage this could cost your thousands of dollars if you hit it at the right speed," Saggs said.
So hitting a big pothole could put an even bigger hole in your wallet!
