Sequester could close towers at rural airports across West Virginia

Posted: Updated:

The Federal Aviation Administration announced on Friday, Feb. 22 that the Transportation Department plans to close the towers at 100 airports that have 150,000 flights or fewer each year, if automatic spending cuts go into effect as scheduled March 1.

Decisions on which ones will be closed will come out of meetings the FAA has with air-traffic controllers and airlines. USA Today sent a list of 200 airports from which the department said it will select 100 whose towers will be closed by April 1.

Here are the ones on the list for WV:

  • North Central West Virginia in Bridgeport, W.Va.
  • Wheeling Ohio County in Wheeling, W.Va.
  • Tri-State Milton J. Ferguson Field in Huntington, W.Va.
  • Greenbrier Valley in Lewisburg, W.Va.
  • Mid-Ohio Valley Regional in Parkersburg, W.Va.
