Fire damages home in Daniels, Neighbor vents concerns

DANIELS -

A home in Raleigh County was destroyed on Saturday, Feb. 23 after flames blazed through the attic and into the rest of the house. No one was home at the time.

"The whole house was engulfed in flames," said a neighbor.

Around noon on Saturday, Ghent, Mabscott and Beaver Fire departments arrived to find a home in Daniels completely ablaze.

Beaver Fire Chief, Mike Cowger tells 59News it appeared the fire started in the attic. The first order of business, after putting out the fire, was to make sure it doesn't start again.

"My guys are inside now pulling the ceiling down, attempting to root out all the heavy fire in the attic space to make sure we don't have a rekindle," Cowger said.

A neighbor, Phyllis Summers, shared with 59News what it was like to look over to flames engulfing a home nearby.

"I heard a siren, I looked up and it went on past my house. Then I heard another one and all I could see was black smoke and fire," Summers said.

No one was in home at time, but neighbors told us the homeowner has two little kids. Summers was relieved to find out no one was harmed.

"Yes. It was a relief to find out that they were gone. It was a relief," she added.

Chief Cowger told 59News he believes the house to be a total loss from the flames as well as the damage inside from smoke and water.

Summers said any loss of a home is a tragedy.

"I'm sad, I feel for the family. It just breaks your heart to watch a house go up in flames."

The property owners' home owner insurance will look into investigating the cause of the fire. If need be the fire marshal will get involved.
