American Public University System hosts its second annual history colloquium on the impact of digital technologies on Civil War Studies on Saturday, March 30 in Charles Town.

"Civil War Studies and the Digital (R)Evolution" is hosted by APUS's University Archives and Special Collections.

Scholars, authors, and educators will explore the blossoming of new forms of inquiry for the 150th anniversary of the most devastating war in American history. Their multi-disciplinary panels discuss the ways digital technologies and web-based applications are changing the nature of Civil War scholarship and bringing a richer understanding to this complex historical era.

APUS Professor of History Donald R. Shaffer will deliver the keynote address, "There's an App for That: Adventures in Using Technology to Teach and Research the American Civil War." Shaffer authored "After the Glory: The Struggles of Black Civil War Veterans," which won the Peter Seaborg Award for Civil War Scholarship in 2005.

Panelists also include Jim Surkamp, creator of the APUS-sponsored CivilWarScholars.com website, and noted Civil War-era novelist and historian Bob O'Connor.

"The field of Civil War Studies has been significantly impacted by online applications and tools," said APUS Archivist Brad Wiles.

"Along with rapidly increasing digital availability of primary and secondary resources, historians – both scholarly and popular – have been forced to rethink, reinterpret, and refashion approaches to what was previously considered to be settled history. The digital revolution has also offered an unprecedented ability to share and analyze information, enabling new understandings and debates to emerge."

The colloquium takes place 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in APUS's Finance Center at 393 North George Street in Charles Town.
