GREENSBURG, Pa. -
The Concord University women's basketball team's season came to an end
Monday night with a 78-65 loss at Seton Hill University in the first
round of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Tournament.
The Mountain Lions finish the year with an overall record of 7-22. Seton
Hill improves to 17-12 and advances to the second round of the
conference tournament to play Alderson-Broaddus Wednesday night.
Sophomore guard Stephanie Wagner led Concord with a season-high 21
points, nine assists and two steals. Wagner shot 7-for-10 from the field
and 4-for-5 from three-point range.
Sophomore forward Rachel Artrip added 14 points and four steals.
Classmate Jacqueline Kestner collected her sixth double-double of the
season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Honorable mention All-WVIAC
honoree Amanda Smith chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.
Concord forced 18 Seton Hill turnovers while making just nine of its
own, but shot only 36 percent (25-for-69) from the field to Seton Hill's
46 percent (23-for-50).
The Griffins were also awarded nearly twice as many free throws than
Concord (32-18); SHU made 27 of its attempts to Concord's nine. Seton
Hill out-rebounded Concord 43-35.
The first half was a game of runs. The Mountain Lions opened the game up
6-0 thanks to four quick points from Artrip and two by Wagner before
SHU responded with a 10-0 run of its own to take a four-point lead six
minutes into the contest.
Concord countered by scoring nine of the next 12 points to retake the
advantage 15-13 only to see the Griffins comeback to open up an
11-point, 28-17, lead with 4:43 to play in the period after a 15-2
spurt. The Mountain Lions closed out the half by cutting away at the SHU
lead and trailed by only four points at the break, 36-32.
Artrip keyed the Mountain Lions' offense with 12 first-half points. As a team, Concord shot 40 percent in the opening period.
Wagner opened the second half in fine fashion, maing two three-pointers in under a minute to move CU back on top 38-36.
However, the lead was short lived as Seton Hill proceeded to rattle off
six straight points to pull ahead for a final time. Concord stayed
within striking distance for much of the half, but was unable to make
one final comeback. SHU steadily built its lead to double digits on its
way to the 13-point victory, 78-65.
Monday night was the final Concord games in the careers of seniors Katy Somerville and Tanisha Williams.
