HARRISBURG, Pa., March 1, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission Chairman Gerry Robinson read to students at Camp Curtin Elementary School in Harrisburg today as part of American Literacy Corporation's 500 Men Reading Week.

Robinson joined Harrisburg area native Marques Colston of the New Orleans Saints and Harrisburg cultural, business and education leaders in celebrating the importance of literacy and positive male role models.

"Equal educational opportunity is every child's legal right," Robinson said. "But outside of school, every child doesn't have a role model who reads to them and is enthusiastic about learning.

"Community involvement in our schools is one of the best ways to ensure that every child receives an equal opportunity, regardless of race, sex, ethnicity, religion or disability."

Also participating in the 500 Men Reading event were commission staff members Kyle Allen, an attorney specializing in education discrimination issues, and civil rights investigators Deven Price and Martin Kearney.  Each read to three classrooms and spoke about his career and educational background.

The annual initiative is part of American Literacy Corporation efforts to promote the importance of reading in educational success.

Promoting equal opportunity in Pennsylvania schools is a key part of the mission of PHRC, the state civil rights agency.  Learn more at www.phrc.state.pa.us.
