The Mercer County Health Department issued a release on Friday, March 8 confirming that a raccoon has tested positive for rabies. The animal was picked up on Princeton Ave in Bluefield, W.Va. This is the first positive case of the disease identified in 2013.
Health leaders said that a human was exposed to rabies during the incident. Anyone who has been bitten by a wild raccoon or who is concerned that their pet may have had contact with a raccoon should call the Mercer County Health Department at 304-324-8367.
According to the release from the health department, rabies has a long incubation period and it could be six months or more before an animal shows symptoms. Anyone living in the Bluefield area is asked to call their veterinarian to make sure their pets are properly vaccinated. Residents should also keep an eye out for animals that are showing symptoms of rabies, including dogs, cats, horses, cows, raccoons, foxes, skinks and coyotes.
The health department warns people that wild rabid animals may appear to be tame. People are advised to watch them from a distance and make sure children know not to pick up or pet unfamiliar animals. Any wild animal that is acting strangely should be reported to the Division of Natural Resources.
