Our 59 News crews were wondering just how the Amber Alerts systems works, in light of two missing girls recovered after a state-wide manhunt.

According to the Amber Alert web site, 12 alerts were sent out nation wide this year. Of the 12 children abducted, 10 were returned safely into the arms of their loved ones. That is an 83 percent success rate.

Our crews took this statistic to folks on the street and one Mount Hope woman was happy to hear this statistic.

"I think that that's terrific. I couldn't image being a mother and having your child go missing. But to have them come back, wow you are just very blessed," Lavada Whitt, Hope said.

Whitt is a mother of two small children and she said she was keeping a watchful eye on the roads in case she spotted the two girls from the Amber Alert.

Our crews also spoke with Tabby Modley of Beckley.  She is a mother of 3 girls and said this was a hot topic all day at work.  She was happy to her the news the two girls had been recovered and said, "It is wonderful. I am just glad the Amber Alert is here now. I just wish it was here for others kids.

Experts said the success of the system is dependent on citizens just like Whitt and Modley keeping their eyes and ears out for information.

The Amber Alert uses message boards along the interstate, radio; TV and social media to help quicken communication.

Our 59 News crews discovered the number of times an alert has been sent out in the mountain state.   Crews uncovered there have been 3 Amber Alerts for the state of West Virginia since 2011.

In 2011, Chloe Clark was taken from Mingo County and recovered. In 2012, Porshia Atwell was taken from Mercer County and was safely found.  Finally, in this most recent Amber Alert both girls were found and safe.
