RACINE -

According to the WV Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training, a miner was killed Wednesday evening in roof fall.

The incident happened at 5:45 p.m. according to Amy Louviere from the state Office of Miner's Health, Safety and Training.

The injured miner was brought to the surface and died as a result of his injuries according to Louviere.

He was a roof bolter at Newtown Energy's Peerless Rachel Mine Racine, Boone County. We've learned the mine is operated by Patriot Coal.

A closure order was issued to the mine operator. MSHA District 4 personnel responded upon notification and an accident investigation is under way.

According to the MSHA website, this is the first fatality at a mine in West Virginia since the safety stand down, and the fifth West Virginia mine-related death in 2013.

The injured miner was brought to the surface and died as a result of his injuries.

We're working to get more information on this developing story.
