BLUEFIELD, W.Va. -

A Bluefield West Virginia family dealing with a double dose of bad news.

They were among the thousands of passengers aboard the Carnival Cruise ship "Legend" that had propulsion issues and had to forego the last port of call, the Grand Cayman.

But that's not the worst of it.

When the family returns Monday to their home on the 400 block of Union Street, they will find their home heavily damaged by an early morning fire.

Neighbor Jamere Kelseor said, "When we got out of the car this morning, we saw the house on fire, it was smoking."

Another neighbor Robert Faulkerson said, "I went downstairs to smoke a cigarette and I noticed there was a glow and I thought what in the world is going on. I come out here and there's smoke coming out and I called the fire department."

Bluefield, Green Valley and Bluefield-Virginia firefighters responded to the fire Sunday morning.

It took them almost an hour to put out the blaze. Neighbors tell 59 News it was shocking to see flames and smoke rise from a home at 5:00 in the morning.

Kelseor said, "My mom was like oh my God. Oh my God look at their house."

A neighbor said even though they'll be happy to on land, they'll be shocked when they come home to this.

Kelseor said, "They're at the Bahamas, their ship broke down. They come back tomorrow. I'd say they're not going to be happy when they come back tomorrow."

Even in the midst of tragedy, Sunday was Saint Patrick's Day and neighbors said luck was on their side.

Faulkerson said, "The luckiest thing that ever happened is they are on the cruise and the boat broke down. That's the luckiest thing that ever happened to him. Him and his children and wife would have been in there and they would have been gone at that point. The smoke was boiling out of there."

The State Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire.

Firefighters said the house is a total loss.
