Cunard Road closures extended for safety reasons

Posted: Updated:

The National Park Service announced on Monday April 1 that a road which offers access to the New River will be closed more often while repairs are made.

Repairs to Cunard Road began in March and the NPS has been working with Federal Highways to make sure necessary fixes are made.  The road was planned to be closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in April.  Those closures are now expected to be Monday through Friday from April 1 to April 26.  The reason for the extended hours is because there are safety concerns from the construction work.

"This access to the river for boaters, fisherman, campers, and hikers needed repairs from numerous storm events over the past two years that have caused six slips to the asphalt roadway," said National Park Service officials.  "The roadway is dangerous to through traffic with drops of more than twelve inches. The contractors are performing four foot excavations as a result of the repair work to the base and sub-base of the roadway, preventing one lane openings particularly on the sharp curves of this access."

Here is a look at when Cunard Road will be closed:

6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday from April 1 through April 26.

One lane of traffic utilizing single lane closures can be expected from:

6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, during daylight hours on April 29 through May 12.

Officials said there is a possibility of long delays during the paving process and the possibility of evening closures.  Also closed during the construction is the Horse Trail Parking Lot so the contractor can use it as a staging area.  The road closures are for all through traffic including pedestrians.
