Put the MP3 players down, the sandwich aside and turn the phone on silent.

Tazewell Police Department is joining DRIVE SMART VIRGINIA in supporting Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

According to Eric McGuire, Tazewell County Grants Manager, "the number of people focused on the phone, and not on the road, has really turned into a serious problem."

DRIVE SMART VIRGINIA focuses on reaching local businesses, state agencies, schools, cities and community leaders to help spread the word that distracted driving affects everyone.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 3,331 people were killed in crashes caused by distracted drivers which is an increase of 2% since 2010.
