As the 100th anniversary of the most deadly mine accident in Fayette County's history approaches, ground breaking on a memorial is scheduled to begin this weekend.

The Layland Miners Memorial Committee is scheduled to break ground on the Layland Miners Memorial in Fayette County off of Route 41.

After 2 years of donations the committee has managed to get over $16,000 with the help of a grant from the National Coal Heritage Foundation.

During the ground breaking Margaret Staggers and other dignitaries will be present, including readings from both Senator Joe Manchin and Representative Nick Rahall will be read.

The event will take place behind Layland Baptist Church at 6 P.M. Saturday, April 6.

The tragedy occurred March 15 of 1915 when 112 miners lost their live during work.
