WASHINGTON, D.C. -

State Division of Culture and History Commissioner Randall Reid-Smith along with U.S. Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, both D-W.Va., have been honored for their commitment to West Virginia music education programs.

The three were recognized last week at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., by the National Association for Music Education, the VH1 Save The Music Foundation and the National Association of Music Merchants.

The nonprofit VH1 foundation has provided more than $1 million for music education in 35 schools in 30 West Virginia counties. Smith reports that the effort will expand to 45 schools in 36 counties this year.

The Shepherdstown Middle School Jazz Band performed during the ceremony. Since the band received instruments from the VH1 foundation, it has won a state jazz band competition.
