W.Va. trooper kills dog after it runs toward him

PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) -

A West Virginia State Police official says a trooper shot and killed a pit bull because he thought the dog was attacking him.

Princeton detachment commander Sgt. D.W. Miller says two pit bulls ran toward Trooper W.H. File after he got out of his cruiser. File shot one dog and the other fled.

Miller tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the incident occurred Saturday while File was responding to a call at a mobile home park near Princeton. He didn't know the nature of the call.

Tonya Church says her son owned the pit bull that was shot. She says the dog was shot after her son let it outside so it could relieve itself.

Church says her son's dog was about 6 months old and wasn't aggressive.
