Tennis Player Prepares to Repeat Bridge-Design Title

BECKLEY -

Aniket Zinzuwadia is pretty smart.

"Right now, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus, AP English and AP Microeconomics this semester," he said about his course work.

The Woodrow Wilson junior will defend his title, along with Shady Spring's Nick Bartusiak, at the West Point Bridge Design Contest next month.

"I go through a process of trial and error to figure out the best optimal design," Zinzuwadia said. "We work with different types of steels, solid bar versus hallow-tubed."

Just like the serve and volley of the design contest, that also applies to the serve and volley of tennis. Aniket plays for Beckley.

"You look at your opponent and see what weakness he has, or what weakness you have in your design. So you figure out your best solution," he said.

His academic success stretches from the classroom and computers to the court. The Flying Eagles, as a whole, excel in those areas.

"He does well playing tennis. He is very focused. He's driven and tries to be the best at what he does. On the sidelines in between matches, yesterday they were out here doing Trigonometry in between," Woodrow Wilson tennis coach Paulette Umberger said.

Last year at the bridge-design contest, both team members won $10,000 scholarships and a laptop. And this year they'll be the top seed.

"Everybody is looking for me, or from our team, because right now we are considered the best one," Zinzuwadia said.
